Learn to Read Jacksonville is back! While financial circumstances forced the temporary suspension of operations in November 2009, the Learn to Read Jacksonville Board of Directors is excited to announce that Learn to Read is once again offering literacy assistance to members of the Jacksonville community. As a result of much hard work and the generous spirit of many benefactors, Learn to Read is working with our partner in education, the Jacksonville Public Library's Center for Adult Learning, and operating from shared offices at 303 N. Laura Street, Jacksonville.
Learn to Read Jacksonville is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving adult literacy in Duval County. Since 1969, Learn to Read Jacksonville has served adults 16 years of age or older in Northeast Florida who want to improve reading skills or learn to read. Relying almost entirely on volunteers and operating primarily on community and grant funding, Learn to Read Jacksonville is a grassroots, 501(C)3 organization with accreditation from ProLiteracy America and memberships with the Literacy Council of Jacksonville, the Florida Literacy Coalition, the Jacksonville Community Council, Inc., the Nonprofit Center and others. Through community support, Learn to Read provides literacy tutoring, free of charge, to over 500 students each year.
One in five Duval County residents read at or below the sixth grade level. Reading is something most of us take for granted. Whether it is glancing at a restaurant menu, reading the newspaper, reviewing a PTA newsletter, deciphering doctor's orders, following a recipe, or applying for a job, literacy is a critical life skill. It may surprise you that so many people in Jacksonville cannot read, but it is an unfortunate reality. That is why Learn to Read is here; to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families through literacy education. This important work would not be possible without the support of the community, volunteers, and donors.
